In the 1970's Dave Mason began to suffer from a health problem and turned to a new health measure called "jogging". He secured the recommended shoes and the entire family began enjoying the jogging meets held throughout the state. As he was continually asked where to secure the proper shoes, he began taking a few pairs to the meets. Before Dave and Sandy Mason realized it, they had a business underway.
Dave and Sandy began studying proper fit procedures for shoes, especially those people with foot problems. After years of selling shoes out of their van, the Masons opened their first store front in 1978 at Dailey's Mall in Delta, Ohio. They advertised nationally and shipped shoes all over the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Scandinavia, France, England, and Africa.
Dave was speaking at health seminars and appearing often on television with Jeannine Lauber, Jerry Anderson, etc. to promote the 13 Strong Run. This was initiated by Sandy who suggested to the television station in a letter to sponsor a half-marathon which is 13 miles, to coordinate with their Station 13. The Masons were charter members of the Fulton, Williams County Road Runners Club and of the Toledo Road Runners Club.
In 1979, Dave gave up his work for Dana Corporation and opened another store in the Meadowbrook Mall on the corner of Reynolds and Hill in Toledo. In 1986 Dave and Sandy sold this store to their son and daughter-in-law, James and Michelle Mason. At this same time, the Masons moved the Delta store to the current location in Delta, Journey's End.
In 1992, James moved the Toledo Store, Dave's Performance Footgear, to the Promenade Shops on Monroe Street in Sylvania. Dave's Performance Footgear out grew the Promenade location, and in 2000 expanded and relocated down the street to it's current location in the Star - Lite Plaza and opened a New Balance Concept Store along side the running store.
The Mason Family and Dave's Running Shop, Inc. continue to be strong supporters of the running community in Northwest Ohio.
